The Club "Goes Dutch

12/05/2006

Thursday 11 May saw Club President, Alan O'Neill, and David Strange set off for Holland with our Ambassadorial Scholar, Yaw Offei, not far behind. Alan, David and Yaw were to be guests at District 1550's annual conference, being held this year in Beesd. The reason for the invitation is that Yaw is sponsored by Rotary District 1550 but he is studying in District 1130, London, so we thought that it would be a great opportunity to take him to the Netherlands to meet the people that had so generously sponsored his course and accomodation. Yaw stayed with Past District Governor Ton Van Hagen and his wife Riet, and they were excellent hosts. It was Ton who had arranged the sponsorship for Yaw. Yaw facilitated a seminar in 'inclusion for deaf people' on Friday afternoon before attending the Governor's Dinner in the evening where Alan and Yaw can be seen exchanging club and district banners with the District Governor, William van Meeteren. Yaw addressed the conference on the Saturday morning, and explained to the delegates the importance of his course, both to himself and to the people of Ghana. Yaw presented a Kente, which, in Ghana, is a valued mark of respect to District Governor William who was seen wearing it for the rest of the day. As a result of this trip, there is a possibility that the Rotary Club of Hanwell & Northfields may set up a longer term relationship with the Rotary Club of Culemborg.
