Visit by Ealing Young Carers

05/02/2013

A good way for organisations to enlist our support in the activities that they are doing in the community is to come along to the club on one of our speaker nights and tell us about what they are up to.

One organisation that dis this recently was Ealing Young Carers Project, which is run by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust and supports young carers who live in the London Borough of Ealing.

Young carers are children and young people who look after someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse.

A young carer may do some or all of the following:

- Practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping.

- Physical care, such as lifting, helping a parent on stairs or with physiotherapy.

- Personal care, such as dressing, washing, helping with toileting needs.

- Managing the family budget, collecting benefits and prescriptions.

- Administering medication.

- Looking after or 'parenting' younger siblings.

- Emotional support.

- Interpreting, due to a hearing or speech impairment or because English is not the family's first language.

Some young carers may undertake high levels of care, whereas for others it may be frequent low levels of care. Either can impact heavily on a child or young person.

The project aims to support all young carers with after school, lunchtime and homework clubs and also to provide occasional trips out and activities which give young carers the opportunity to have fun with their peers. Our support workers also aim to provide an overarching support network for all young carers in their caring role.

The talk on the night was given by Kathryn Sobczak and Peter Shears, it was of particular interest as the club had recently run a Quiz Night for them earlier in the year and was able to present them with a check for £600

If you would like the opportunity to come and talk to our club and tell us about what you do in the community please contact our membership team via email at:
