07/05/2006

On the 7th May 2006 3 students from Twyford C of E School travelled to Salford University in Manchester to take part in the national finals of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition.

The team qualified for the event by firstly winning the West London Heat of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition back in February 2006, the event was sponsored by the Rotary clubs of Acton, Ealing, Hanwell & Northfields, Heston and Isleworth and Shepherds Bush and was a great success with a total of 22 teams entering the competition.

On the 30th April after winning the London Area Final the team travelled to Colchester to take part in the Regional final; there are 8 regional finals for Great Britain and Ireland and the winners of each region go forward to the national final. As would be expected the entrants were of a very high standard and the topics varied. After an excellent performance by all 3 members of the team they were victorious and for the first time since the competition was launched, a team from the London area made it through to the National Final.

The final was held at Salford University in Manchester and proved to be a great success for the team, they were awarded second place overall in the competition, and additionally were awarded individual awards for Best Vote of Thanks and Best Speaker.

Mr Lawrence Kormornick father of Kiri Kormornick said Kiri and the team from Twyford C of E School have really enjoyed taking part in the event, it was really enjoyable from a spectators point of view as well. Who would have even dreamt just a few months ago that they would be taking part in the National Final, let alone taking two individual golds and team silver. It has been truly remarkable a quite unforgettable and memorable experience
